Art with a purpose

Beautiful on the wall.
Better acoustics in your room.

A picture can do more than give a room character. Our acoustic wall art combines decorative designs with a carefully considered construction that helps reduce sound reflections.

How it works

It is what is inside that makes the difference.

Behind the image is an acoustic panel. The specially adapted canvas lets sound pass through, allowing the panel to absorb some of the sound energy and reduce reflections back into the room.

01 / Canvas and acoustic panel

A canvas that lets sound through.

The image is printed on specially adapted canvas that allows sound waves to pass through. Behind the canvas is an acoustic panel that absorbs some of the sound energy. This means less sound is reflected back into the room.

The difference depends on factors such as the room's surfaces, the picture's position and the total absorbing area.

Sound and reverberation

Why it works.

Sound travels through the air in waves. When these waves hit hard surfaces such as walls, floors and windows, some of the sound bounces back into the room. In rooms with long reverberation times, sound can linger and conversations can be harder to follow.

The acoustic panel has a porous structure with small air-filled cavities. As sound enters, the fibres slow the movement of air and some of the sound energy is absorbed. This can reduce reverberation and create a more comfortable acoustic environment where conversations are easier to follow.

02 / Hanging and wall spacing

A small spacer.
A carefully considered detail.

Grey spacers on the back are 20 mm high and hold the picture slightly away from the wall. The gap creates an air space that can help the panel absorb sound more effectively, including at lower frequencies.

The back of the picture has hanging fittings and grey spacers. The picture arrives ready to hang. The exact effect depends on construction, mounting and frequency.

03 / Specially developed canvas

Canvas designed for acoustic wall art.

The canvas is specially developed for acoustic wall art. It lets sound through so it can reach the sound-absorbing panel behind the image.

The woven canvas also has very high abrasion resistance, combining a durable surface with a structure suited to its purpose.

What does the percentage mean?

The percentage shows practical sound absorption at the stated frequency: αp × 100. For example, 0.50 corresponds to 50%. It does not mean that the sound level throughout the room is reduced by 50%.

Sound absorption test conditions: approximately 35 mm panel thickness, 55 mm total mounting depth and 10.8 m² test area. The values apply to the tested construction and mounting.

clearly explained.

The sound absorption test gave the following result: Absorption B. The result applies to the construction and mounting tested. An absorption value at a particular frequency does not mean that the sound level throughout the room is reduced by the same percentage.

Sound absorption test results

The sound absorption test gave the following result: Absorption B, with a weighted sound absorption coefficient αw of 0.80 (H). The amount of sound absorbed varies with frequency.

Good to know

Frequently asked questions about acoustic wall art.

What is acoustic wall art?

Acoustic wall art combines a decorative image with sound-absorbing material. It can help improve a room's acoustics while complementing the interior.

How does acoustic wall art work?

The picture's sound-absorbing material captures some of the sound waves and reduces sound reflections from hard surfaces. This can help reduce echo and reverberation in the room.

How does acoustic wall art differ from a canvas print?

Acoustic wall art has sound-absorbing material behind the image to help reduce echo and reverberation. A regular canvas print is primarily decorative.

What difference can acoustic wall art make?

Acoustic wall art can make a room sound less echoey and conversations clearer. The effect depends on the artwork's size and position, as well as the room's layout and furnishings.

How much quieter will it be?

It is difficult to give a general figure. The effect depends on factors such as the room's size and furnishings, and the size, number and position of the pictures.

Does it stop sound travelling between rooms?

No. The picture is intended to improve the acoustic environment in the room where it hangs. It helps reduce sound reflections but is not designed to prevent sound travelling between rooms.

Is acoustic wall art suitable for homes and public spaces?

Yes, acoustic wall art suits private homes as well as public spaces such as offices, restaurants, hotels and meeting rooms. It can improve acoustic comfort while adding a decorative element to the interior.

Can acoustic wall art improve office acoustics?

Yes, it can help reduce reverberation and make the acoustic environment more comfortable. In an open-plan office, several sound-absorbing surfaces may be needed to achieve the desired effect.

What designs can I choose for acoustic wall art?

Choose from our selected designs or personalise your acoustic wall art with your own photo or image. There is plenty of scope to create something that suits your space.

Can I use my own photo?

Yes, you can create acoustic wall art with your own photo or design. See our custom acoustic wall art page for current options and instructions.

How many pictures do I need?

It depends on the room's size, how much it echoes and the effect you want to achieve. One picture can be a good start, while a larger or more echoey room may need several sound-absorbing surfaces.

How do I choose the size?

Consider the room's size, the available wall space and how you want the image to fit in. A larger picture provides a greater sound-absorbing area. Please contact us to discuss sizes or special dimensions.

Where should I position the picture?

Choose a wall in a room where sound easily bounces between hard surfaces. If you use several pictures, you can distribute them across different walls to help achieve more even sound absorption.

How do I know how well a picture absorbs sound?

Ask for information about the picture's sound absorption and whether it has been tested to a relevant standard. Compare test results for the frequencies that matter in your environment, such as those found in speech.

How do I hang acoustic wall art?

Mounting varies between models. Follow the mounting instructions and use fixings suitable for the wall material and the picture's weight.

How do I clean the picture?

It depends on the material. Many textile surfaces can be gently dusted or vacuumed with a soft brush attachment. Always check the product's care instructions before using water or cleaning products.
