Painted by hand. Made for your wall.
The craft behind your oil painting
Take a closer look at the materials, painted surface and construction. Discover what gives a hand-painted artwork its character and how to make it feel at home in your room.

- Linen canvas
- 38 mm deep stretcher frame
- Supplied stretched with hanging hardware
01 / The painted surface
Brushwork that brings the painting to life.
Our oil paintings are painted by hand by artists. The paint and brushwork form part of the surface itself, giving the artwork a character that differs from a print. Depending on the painting, the texture may be pronounced and lively or more subtle.
Two paintings of the same subject may differ slightly in colour, brushwork and texture. These small variations are part of the craft. Product images show the composition and overall appearance; each hand-painted version has its own character.

02 / The linen canvas
A woven foundation for colour and form.
The paintings are created on linen canvas, which is then stretched over a wooden frame. The weave supports the paint and provides a surface for everything from soft transitions to more expressive brushwork.
The back reveals the canvas weave, fixings and the way the fabric wraps around the frame. The detail images illustrate the construction; colour, texture and the finish of the edges vary between paintings.

03 / The stretcher frame
38 mm deep – a striking profile, too.
The stretcher frame is the wooden structure behind the canvas. Its 38 mm depth, or 3.8 cm, gives the painting a defined profile and presence on the wall. The canvas wraps around the structure, so the painting can be hung without a decorative outer frame.
The stretcher frame is included even when you select “No frame”. A decorative floating frame is a separate option where available. Check the choices offered for your painting and selected size.

04 / The optional floating frame
A slender edge. A striking depth.
A decorative floating frame leaves a small gap around the canvas, creating a defined border for the painting. Its slim front edge keeps the focus on the artwork, while the 55 mm depth gives it a distinctive profile from the side. With no glass in front, the texture of the paint remains visible.
Choose black for contrast or an oak finish for a warmer look, where available. This optional outer frame surrounds the painting’s 38 mm stretcher frame and is not included when you select “No frame”. Available frames and sizes are shown on the product page. Paintings ordered with a frame arrive assembled.

05 / Hanging your painting
Stretched and ready to find its place.
Your painting arrives stretched, with hanging hardware suited to its weight, such as wire or hooks. You do not need to stretch a loose canvas yourself.
Choose screws, wall plugs or other fixings suitable for your wall and the painting’s weight. Follow the supplied instructions. For a multi-panel painting, plan the entire arrangement before making holes in the wall.

Choose with the whole room in mind.
Measure the wall space and compare it with the furniture below. Mark out the proposed dimensions with paper or low-tack tape. A large painting can become a focal point, while smaller works can form a personal grouping.
Pick up a colour from your furniture or textiles, or choose a subject that introduces a deliberate contrast. Consider the painting both up close and from where you will usually see it.

A multi-panel painting can suit a wide wall or create rhythm above a sofa. Check the number of panels and each panel’s dimensions in the product description. Include the gaps when planning the overall width.

What is an oil painting?
An oil painting is a work painted with oil paint, which consists of colour pigments mixed with a drying oil, usually linseed oil. It is most often painted on canvas, although wooden panels and other surfaces can also be used.
Oil paint dries slowly, giving the artist time to blend colours, create soft transitions and build up the image in layers. The surface can be smooth and finely detailed or have a pronounced texture with thicker layers of paint and visible brushstrokes.
Subjects range from landscapes and portraits to abstract forms. At Canvasbutik, our oil paintings are painted by hand on linen canvas and supplied stretched over a wooden frame, ready to hang.
Are your oil paintings hand-painted or printed?
They are hand-painted. Unlike a canvas print, the surface is created with paint and brushwork. Also read the description of the particular artwork you are considering.
Read about canvas printsWill my painting look exactly like the photograph?
Painting by hand produces natural variations. Colours, brushwork and texture may differ slightly, even for the same design and size. Screen settings and room lighting also affect how colours appear.
Do all oil paintings have the same texture?
No. Some works have prominent layers of paint and visible brushwork; others have a smoother surface. Look at the product’s close-up images and ask us if you would like more information about a particular painting.
Contact customer serviceWhat canvas do you use?
Our oil paintings are painted on linen canvas. The canvas is stretched over a wooden structure and secured at the back.
How deep is the stretcher frame?
The stretcher frame is 38 mm deep, equivalent to 3.8 cm. This is the structure behind the canvas, rather than any optional decorative outer frame.
What does “No frame” mean?
It means you are not adding a decorative outer frame. The stretcher frame supporting the canvas is still included, and the painting arrives stretched.
Can I add a decorative frame?
Where frame options are offered, you can select them on the product page. Suitable frames depend on the painting and size. Contact customer service if you are unsure.
Read about decorative floating framesDoes the painting arrive ready to hang?
Yes. It is supplied stretched with hanging hardware appropriate to its weight, such as wire or hooks. You will need wall fixings suited to your wall and the painting’s weight.
How do I choose the right size?
Measure the wall and nearby furniture. Use paper to try out the dimensions on the wall and check the product’s size guide. Consider both the viewing distance and the space around the artwork.
Browse large oil paintingsHow do I hang a multi-panel painting?
Check the panel dimensions and suggested arrangement. Lay the panels on the floor first, then mark the full composition on the wall. The gaps between panels affect the total width.
Explore multi-panel paintingsCan I combine different paintings?
Yes. A shared colour, style or subject can tie a group together. Try out the arrangement before hanging and give each work enough space around it.
How do I clean an oil painting?
Dust gently with a soft, dry brush, without pressing or rubbing the painted surface. Do not use water, cleaning products or solvents. Contact us about stains, damage or loose paint.
Read our care adviceWhere should I avoid hanging the painting?
Avoid prolonged direct sunlight, strong heat sources, damp conditions and splashes. A dry indoor space with stable conditions is preferable to a bathroom or a position right beside a cooker.
Does an oil painting absorb sound?
A standard oil painting is primarily decorative and should not be treated as a tested sound absorber. Choose an acoustic picture if sound absorption is a specific requirement.
